How to Play 4D in Malaysia: Big, Small, Box and iBox Explained
Published 24 October 2026 · 4D & Lottery
4D is one of the most familiar games in Malaysia. You pick a four-digit number, wait for the draw and check the results. Simple – but the bet types (Big, Small, Box, iBox) can be confusing if you are new.
This guide explains everything step by step.
How a 4D Draw Works
- You choose any number from 0000 to 9999.
- Each draw produces 23 winning numbers:
- 1st prize – 1 number
- 2nd prize – 1 number
- 3rd prize – 1 number
- Starter – 10 numbers
- Consolation – 10 numbers
- Your number must match a winning number exactly, in the same order (unless you use Box or iBox).
Big vs Small
Every 4D bet is either Big, Small or both.
| Big | Small | |
|---|---|---|
| Prizes covered | 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Starter, Consolation | 1st, 2nd, 3rd only |
| Winning numbers covered | 23 | 3 |
| Chance of a win | Higher | Lower |
| Size of each prize | Smaller | Larger |
Choose Big if you want more chances to win something. Choose Small if you only care about the top three prizes and want a bigger payout when you hit one.
Prize amounts per RM1 depend on the operator and the draw, so always check the payout table before you bet.
Box: Cover Every Arrangement
A Box bet places a full stake on every arrangement of your four digits.
How many arrangements depends on your number:
| Your number | Example | Arrangements |
|---|---|---|
| 4 different digits | 1234 | 24 |
| 1 pair | 1123 | 12 |
| 2 pairs | 1122 | 6 |
| 3 of the same | 1112 | 4 |
| All the same | 1111 | 1 |
Example: a RM1 Box on 1234 is really 24 separate RM1 bets, so it costs RM24. If 4321 is drawn, you win as if you had bet RM1 on 4321.
iBox: Same Coverage, Smaller Cost
iBox (also called Mbox or roll) covers all arrangements too, but your stake is divided across them instead of multiplied.
Example: a RM24 iBox on 1234 spreads RM1 on each of the 24 arrangements – the same as the RM24 Box above. A RM1 iBox on 1234 puts only about RM0.04 on each arrangement, so a win pays much less.
Box or iBox?
- Use Box if you want full prizes on any arrangement and are happy to pay more.
- Use iBox if you want to cover all arrangements on a small budget and accept smaller wins.

Tips for Playing 4D
- Decide your budget per draw and stick to it.
- Big is better for beginners – more ways to win something.
- Check the total cost of Box bets – 24 arrangements add up quickly.
- There are no “hot” or “cold” numbers. Each draw is random and independent of past results.
- Keep it fun. 4D is a lottery – most bets do not win.

Register NowFrequently Asked Questions
How many winning numbers are there in each 4D draw?
Each draw has 23 winning numbers: one each for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize, plus 10 Starter and 10 Consolation numbers.
Should I choose Big or Small?
Big gives you more chances to win (all 23 numbers) with smaller prizes. Small only pays on 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize but the payouts are higher.
What is the difference between Box and iBox?
Box places a full stake on every arrangement of your digits, so it costs more. iBox spreads one stake across all arrangements, so it costs the same as a normal bet but each win pays less.
